(St. John’s, NL, Office of the Vice-President (Research); 04 Mar. 2014)Dr. Richard Marceau, vice-president (research), is today releasing a draft of the Strategic Research Intensity Plan 2014-2020 for university-wide feedback.

The process of arriving at the Strategic Research Intensity Plan 2014-2020 was initiated by Dr. Marceau on December 5, 2013 at the request of President Gary Kachanoski and the Board of Regents.

Building on the Research Strategy Framework, the purpose of Memorial University’s Strategic Research Intensity Plan is to initiate an historic generational transformation of Memorial University’s ability to:

  • accelerate the production and dissemination of scholarly outcomes, and strengthen its capacity to compete successfully for grants from Canada and abroad;
  • intensify its ability to supervise and graduate master and doctoral candidates, and grow the pool of highly qualified human capital so important for building Newfoundland and Labrador, and Canada;
  • continue to build its reputation, facilitating the recruitment of high quality students, faculty members and staff to the university, and the province; and
  • enhance its capability to address the research priorities of government, industry, and society at large in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Phase one of its creation included meetings with Memorial University’s senior academic and administrative heads, as well as student representatives. Phase two involved meetings with the university’s formal advisory and decision-making bodies in the area of research. Consultations included all faculties and schools on the St. John’s campus, and the Grenfell and Marine Institute campuses, as well as with the Labrador Institute.

Phase three now begins with a six-week consultation period aimed at the entire university community. To be successful, the plan needs to express the aspirations of the entire university community. To this end, the document, presently in draft form, is submitted to the Memorial University community over the next six weeks for all comments and suggestions.  Feedback will be accepted until Monday, April 14, via e-mail vp.research@mun.ca, or internal mail, Office of the Vice-president (Research), A2021, St. John’s campus.
