SafetyNet is a comprehensive multidisciplinary research program based at the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research that studies occupational health and safety of marine and coastal work. It includes researchers in medicine, nursing, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering and marine sciences, and involves partners in the public sector, private sector and in the very coastal communities in which the research is taking place.
The SafetyNet program is designed to offer evidence-based, practical recommendations for innovations in diagnostic and therapeutic methods, regulatory regimes, and the training of health professionals, workers, and managers.
SafetyNet originally consisted of nine inter-related research projects investigating issues related to health and safety in marine and coastal work. This includes projects relating to the offshore oil and gas industry and human cold working conditions. SafetyNet is currently involved in five other inter-related projects as the Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) node of the Atlantic Networks for Prevention Research (ANPR). SafetyNet is also a partner in the Eastern Canada Research Consortium on Workplace Health and Safety which supports inter-provincial networking, knowledge transfer (KT) and interdisciplinary training and research development related to workplace health and safety.
