(Providence, Rhode Island, April 3, 2015) Some three dozen city government and business leaders announced the start of a “cluster development” study they hope will help convince new companies to locate in Providence by determining which locations in the city are best suited to various types of businesses.
Mayor Jorge O. Elorza, City Council President Luis A. Apointe and three other council members, Rhode Island Foundation President and CEO Neil Steinberg and an array of business leaders and members of the city’s Economic Development Task Force were on hand at the offices of the Rhode Island Foundation to mark the start of the effort.
Cluster development policies try to find businesses that need similar resources and job skills and locate them closely together. That attracts skilled workers looking for jobs and provokes competition among employers for them, in the form of higher wages and better benefits.
