Bruce Colbourne

Bruce Colbourne obtained a B.Eng. in Naval Architecture Engineering from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1982 and a S.M. in Naval Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983. He worked as a ship designer with German and Milne Inc. of Ottawa, Ontario and returned to graduate study in 1985. In 1989, he received a Ph.D. in Ocean Engineering from Memorial University. He joined the National Research Council Canada, Institute for Ocean Technology (then IMD) in 1986 as a Research Associate developing scaling methods for icebreaking model tests. He has held various positions within NRC-IOT including, Research Officer, Industrial Liaison Officer, Group Leader for Offshore Research and Acting Director General. His recent research work has been on the effects of waves and currents on floating aquaculture structures. He is currently Senior Research Officer, seconded to the NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program, working to develop collaborative research projects within the St. John’s Ocean Technology Cluster. Bruce is an adjunct professor of engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland and has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. He has written more than 80 papers and reports on aspects of ocean engineering and naval architecture and technology development. He has also worked with the Canadian Standards Association in revising and developing standards for Marine Operations for the Canadian offshore industry.
